In China's civilization the majority of people where considered as peasants. Most peasants owned some land to support their families others made money by selling what they grew in the local market. When peasants grew their food they always had to worry about insects, floods, flamines and that could happen at any time.
The state made a requirement of a month of labor to work on public projects. If you are an owner of a slave the slave does whatever you want it to do. The slave status is called "outsider" which means your at the bottom of the social hierarchy.
